Christmas/New Year Closure and Access
Watson Arts Centre/Canberra Potters will be closed from 4pm on 23 December and reopen on 8 January for Summer School. The members’ workshop will be accessible between 10am and 4pm by non-key holders (who have completed an orientation) from 8 January.
There will be no evening access until term 1.
Keyholders – the car park gates will be locked on 31 December and unlocked on 8 January. You are welcome to use the members’ workshop during this time but will not be able to park in the car park.
Staff will be fully back at the facility during regular hours (9am-5pm) from the 15 January.
Workshop access for CPS members
Please contact the admin/enrolment office on 02 6241 7800 or by email for full details of access requirements, times, costs, etc.
To use the CPS workshop facilities as a member, the satisfactory completion of a Workshop Health & Safety (WH&S) orientation is mandatory, as are annual refreshers for continued access. No satisfactory orientation or refresher – no access.
The only current exceptions to this are the Wednesday (handbuilding) and Thursday (general) ‘drop-in’ sessions in the main workshop – these sessions are open to CPS members but do not require the completion of a WH&S orientation or refresher as they are semi-supervised sessions. Members attending these session are expected to abide by CPS workshop health and safety procedures and any health and safety directives given by staff or other authorized personnel, either verbally or via workshop or other notices. The Workshop Manager or session supervisor will from time to time present to attendees at these sessions the same health & safety orientation that is given to class students. (This exception does not apply to other advertised drop-in sessions, which are not supervised and therefore fall under the ‘casual access’ procedures.)
After holding continuous membership for 6 months members may apply for a workshop key giving access out of hours but before a key can be issued an orientation session has to be satisfactorily completed or, if one has not been done in the last 12 months, a refresher session must be completed. The applicant will also have to demonstrate a sound level of equipment competency and WH&S procedures. There is a $50 deposit payable before a key can be issued; this will be refunded when the key is returned. The number of keys that can be issued is limited so if there are no keys currently available then you can be added to a waiting list. A workshop key may be withdrawn from a member found to be not complying with health and safety procedures. A member must keep their membership current whilst a keyholder and undertakes to return their key if they no longer have a need for it.
Free Workshop/Health & Safety Orientation sessions are run once a month (generally the first Sunday of the month – not January – at 2.30pm) for members wanting to use the facilities, or by appointment but with a fee. To register for the next free orientation session, fill in the form at the bottom of this page and click ‘submit’. For further information, contact the admin/enrolment office on 02 6241 7800 or by email for details.
Wednesday and Thursday morning drop-in sessions
These drop-in sessions for members run from 9.30am to 12.30pm during the Canberra Potters 9-week terms and the week preceding the start of time (with the exception of the start of the winter term when there will be no sessions the week before term if they clash with the Winter School).
The Wednesday session is specifically for hand-building. The Thursday session is general, ie hand-building and wheel-throwing.
Orientations December 2017 to February 2018 are:
- Sunday 3 December
- Sunday 4 February
Please note that spaces on each orientation are limited. You must register for a session (and not just turn up on the day) and you must be a member before registering.
