Carried Away

Meet the artists at the opening function 6pm Friday
11th May
The term
‘flow’ was invented (by Mihaly Csíkszentmihályi) to describe
a state in which action and thought meld and the two form a
whole where a person becomes totally absorbed, as if within
the flow of the current. As Joseph Conrad said, “In order to
move others deeply we must deliberately allow ourselves to
be carried away beyond the bounds of our normal
sensibility”. Making art can and should be a true ‘flow’
experience so that the viewer of the final work can be
carried along in the current in a similar way and experience
something of what the artist felt as the piece was created.
In
Carried Away, paintings by Angharad Dean and ceramic
works by Caroline Reid demonstrate the artists ‘carried
away’, using the property of light interacting with surface
layers of paint and glaze to recreate a sense of being swept
along. Taking a flat canvas or a piece of formless clay,
they work with their hands, indeed with their whole bodies
and minds in unison, to bring forth art that speaks for them
of the joy of creation. In keeping with the theme, the
pieces in this exhibition sweep the viewer along rivers,
down waterfalls, up into tall trees and into wonderful
vessels.
“Making
these pieces and then viewing them when complete we are
immersed and absorbed by liquid forms, we are carried away,
we are in ‘flow’ as if within the flow of the current.”
In 2005
Angharad Dean turned from working with people and landscape
(taking a 4-dimensional view of the world as a regional and
town planner) to capturing the immediacy of light, colour
and movement in two dimensions: now she attempts to capture
the 4th dimension – time - in the medium of the 2nd. Her
initial training as a designer has enabled her to see the
world through a painter’s eyes. Thus, Angharad’s paintings
capture movement using precise strokes that juxtapose
colours in a style she has developed from studying the ever
shifting light in nature, and immersing herself in the state
of ‘‘flow”.
Caroline
Reid is a fine craftsman, with a degree in chemistry giving
her a true understanding of the art and science of ceramics.
She has worked with clay for over 25 years. “Exploring what
clay does under the influence of one’s hands is a pure
pleasure, springing from surprise – to speak with one’s
hands needs no words”. After using the potter’s wheel for 20
years, Caroline is now experimenting with coiling of large
vessels and using sprigged decoration with a dry orange
glaze or raku glazes and smoke effects. She strongly
believes that low energy firing is now a must for ceramics.
